The English Law and Legal Language Programme

Courses and exams for the school of law

1. Courses for FAU students

The legal English programme for students of law consists of a compulsory component and an extended programme of courses leading to the award of certificates.

The compulsory component (two hours per week over one semester) enables students to obtain the proof of language competence as stipulated in section 24 of the state exam rules and regulations ( JAPO) and is a broad introduction to English law and English legal language.

In the extended programme, students can choose to take one or more specialised legal language classes in order to expand on their knowledge and obtain certificates at three different levels: basic, intermediate and advanced.

Bachelor students of law and economics are required to complete an English language module (No. 7900) during their studies, which consists of both general and subject-specific components.

Students take a total of four courses (8 semester hours) at levels B2 – C1 CEFR to obtain the requisite 10 ECTS points. Upon completion of the module, students will have improved their general spoken and written English skills in two courses with a focus on academic writing and academic speaking and have acquired basic knowledge of legal English and business English.
