EASP | Course Levels and General Information

Students learning a language for academic or special purposes who want to or are required to attend an English course must take a placement test first.
In the Bachelor’s degree programmes in Political Science (as first subject) and Biology, all students must take a placement test.

As the test result is used to decide which level of course the student should attend, the test is not graded as ‘passed’ or ‘failed’. No grades or points are allocated for the placement test. After it has been corrected, students are given a ‘level’: E1, 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4.

The placement test may be repeated once in another semester, but only before the first course has been taken. As soon as one course has been taken, all other courses have to be attended in the prescribed order.

  • Placement test Level 4 → entitled to take Level 3 and / or Level 4 courses
  • Placement test Level 3 → entitled to take Level 3 courses
  • Placement test Level 2 → entitled to take Level 2 courses
  • Placement test Level 1 → entitled to take Level 1 courses
  • Placement test Level 0 → entitled to take Level 0 courses
  • Placement test Level E → not entitled to take Englisch HaF courses (see “Step 1: Placement Test” for explanation)

  • With a valid placement test you may register for an EngHaf course at the appropriate level (e.g. placement test result “Level 2“ -> register for a Level 2 course)
  • PLEASE ONLY REGISTER FOR THE NUMBER OF COURSES THAT YOU ACTUALLY WISH TO ATTEND. Places in EngHaF courses are in great demand. If you register for 4 courses but actually only intend to take 2 in the current semester, you are blocking places that other students may urgently need.
  • Status immediately after registration = applicant
  • Applicants are checked at regular intervals and their status changed to participant.
  • Anyone who registers for a course they are not entitled to take will be rejected and will usually be informed by email as to how to proceed.
  • After successfully completing a course, students go on to take the next courses in the recommended sequence:
