Detailed description of levels (based on description of levels used by the European framework of Reference)

UNIcert® Basis

Depending on the grades achieved, students who obtain the UNIcert® Basis certificate have acquired basic language skills required in order to be able to exchange simple and straightforward information in routine situations, an initial understanding of social and cultural aspects and basic intercultural skills. The student is able to:

  • Understand spoken or written sentences and commonly used expressions on general or study-related topics
  • Use simple linguistic means to give information about certain selected topics relating personally to them (e.g. where they are from, education at school and university, family, immediate surroundings)
  • Write short, simple notes and messages

UNIcert® I

Depending on the grades achieved, students who obtain the UNIcert® I certificate have acquired elementary skills in the foreign language needed to cope with selected situations they may encounter in daily life, at university and at work and are familiar with selected intercultural aspects. The student is able to:

  • Understand the gist of general and study-related everyday topics in both spoken and written language
  • Express themselves or communicate orally and in writing on topics of general interest or relevance to themselves and their studies by using basic means of expression and grammatical structures and a solid vocabulary base.
  • Draft simple written texts, predominantly of an informative and descriptive nature.

UNIcert® II

Depending on the grades achieved, students who obtain the UNIcert® II certificate have acquired a knowledge of the language and intercultural communication skills which meet the language requirements for spending time living and studying abroad (lowest mobility level) The student is able to:

  • Understand the essential meaning of general, work-related and study-related texts using general and slightly more specific vocabulary, e.g. speeches and presentations as well as longer texts at an intermediate level.
  • Express themselves appropriately both orally and in writing on a variety of cultural and subject-related topics and to participate actively in relevant conversations, using to a certain extent complex sentence structures and subject-specific vocabulary.

UNIcert® III

Depending on the grades achieved, students who obtain the UNIcert® III certificate have acquired general and work-related proficiency in the foreign language and intercultural communication skills which effortlessly meet the requirements for studying and working abroad in a country in which the target language is spoken (advanced mobility level). The student is able to:

  • Use a variety of linguistic means to communicate on selected topics
  • Understand longer general and work-related texts from selected topics with demanding vocabulary and syntax as well as longer, more difficult work-related original spoken texts, to grasp both explicit and implicit information and to gain the necessary information from longer spoken presentations.
  • Express themselves fluently and confidently both in writing and orally on selected complex topics relating to their specialist area which are of relevance for spending time working or studying abroad, using extensive structures and a wide range of both general and specialist vocabulary and to present their own standpoint coherently, cohesively, logically and using an appropriate register.
